The BBC received over 850 complaints after interrupting Mrs. Brown’s Boys to break the news that Nelson Madela had died

Last week the world stood still as the news that one of the most iconic and legendary figures of our time, Nelson Mandela, had passed away. Not so for the viewers of Mrs. Brown’s boys, who felt the need to contact the BBC in their hundreds and complain that the repeat of their favourite show had been interrupted with the news bulletin about Madiba’s death.

According to The Independent the BBC had to come out today in defence of their decision claiming that the death of Mandela was of “singular significance”, reason enough for them to interrupt the show.

The episode in question, entitled “Mammy’s Ass” is over two years old, and in total viewers would have missed a whopping 12 minutes of footage. The show averages around 2.8 million viewers, none of whom it seems have heard of the iPlayer.
