One of Black Mirror’s best new episodes could be getting a sequel

Michael Lanigan

Hip, hip, hooray!

While the fourth season of Charlie Brooker’s tech anthology series has split opinions, the one episode that earned almost unanimous approval was the Star Trek parody, USS Callister.

A twisted episode about a brilliant, but socially inept coder, named Robert Daly who imprisons his co-workers in a simulated version of his favourite TV show, Space Fleet, the idea and its perfect execution immediately had critics calling it the best Black Mirror episode so far. No mean feat, considering the fact that it had to follow-up the likes of the Emmy-award winning San Junipero.

Now, director Toby Haynes has said he might think about developing a possible sequel or spin-off series.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Haynes said he and producer, Louise Sutton had discussed the idea of a TV series, saying:

“I’d love to do a TV series of USS Callister – it’s probably one of the best pilots for a space show ever. And I made it! So I’m keen to see it as a TV series. I think Charlie [Brooker] might revisit it as a Black Mirror. Whether I’m the one to do it, I don’t know.”

While throwing around ideas, one he mentioned was the idea that Robert Daly/Captain Daly actually survived the final showdown between himself and the prisoners on the USS Callister spaceship:

“There is this brilliant idea that he is still alive, and his attempted murder gets pinned on someone. Whose fingerprints do they find in the apartment? There’s so much you could do.”

Haynes added that lead actress, Cristin Milioti said she was on board, while he would find any way of bringing back Breaking Bad-star Jesse Plemons.

Netflix also recently released a series of featurette’s on each episode in the fourth season, which gives a little behind the scenes look into how Brooker’s latest stories were developed.
