The eldest family member proved a particularly big hit with viewers.
From what we had seen in the build-up to Sunday night’s Room to Improve, especially Dermot’s ‘temper tantrum’, the latest episode had the potential to be even more feisty than usual.
Perhaps because it went out on Mother’s Day, however, or perhaps because the tension was more noticeable than usual during the previous episodes this season, it was arguably the softest and most affectionate show to date.
In truth, the kind nature of the family featured in Sunday night’s episode, the Linders family, had a major bearing on the tone of the episode and such was their personality that any fallout over the renovation of the family home in Portrane in Dublin was never likely to be too severe.
While Dermot did get a little upset over being denied access to Lambay Island, the home of Lambay Castle, designed by his architectural hero, Sir Edwin Lutyens, most of the interactions were friendly, with Dermot taking a particular shine to the eldest member of the family, better known as “Ma”.
Even the weather held up its end of the bargain for what was an episode with a sunny disposition throughout and viewers were keen to express their admiration on social media on Sunday night.
You can catch up on the episode in full here; we can only assume that the crankiness will resume next time around.

There’s little in life that soothes the soul as much as #roomtoimprove with #DermyBanBan. The family in Portrane was amazing and the house is gorgeous. A perfect way to round off a brilliant birthday weekend.

What I love about #RoomToImprove more than anything is its ability to show the country of Ireland and its people in the best possible light! Full of characters. Just brilliant!
