The first look at Rory Cowan’s replacement in Mrs Brown’s Boys

Alan Loughnane

We still don’t really know…

It’s been well publicised for the last year that Rory Cowan has finished with Mrs Brown’s Boys, and is moving on to a new chapter of his career.

But, Brendan O’Carroll said that Rory’s character would not be leaving the show or dying off, instead he would be recast.

To avoid a jarring character change in the show, it was revealed that Rory would be having plastic surgery in the show, and that would be the entirely plausible explanation as to why the character of Rory suddenly looked remarkably different.

In the preview for the Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special, we get a first (very brief) look at the new Rory as he sits on the couch with his face covered in bandages after the surgery.

Brendan O’Carroll also revealed that he turned down quite a bit of money to allow Mrs Brown’s Boys to be shown in Russia.

The hit comedy is broadcast all over the world in countries including the US, Australia, South Africa and Iceland but Brendan said he refused to let it be shown in Russia after the networks there wanted to make a crucial change.

“They didn’t want any gay, Russia in particular,” he told Marian Finucane on Radio 1.

“It was a nice little deal, it’s a big country so the fee you’d charge for the licensing is audience-related, so it’s a big audience and it would have been a nice fee.”

The Christmas special is on Christmas Day at 9pm on RTÉ One.
