It has scored a very impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Of all of the genres that TV and streaming can seek to master, horror is probably the most difficult, because the suspense leading up to the big frights can only be stretched out for so long before the audience starts to lose interest.
It is probably why most of the successful horror shows – American Horror Story, The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass – are limited series, instead of ongoing seasons.
Maintaining a sense of dread throughout, scattering with decent shocks, while keeping everyone hooked throughout is a tricky balance, but it is one that From has managed to completely nail.
In terms of a plot set-up, it feels very Stephen King: a very small town is filled with people who have no idea how they got there, and there is no real way to escape. If you drive down the road, you’ll simply wind up straight back in the town again, inexplicably going around in circles. Also, each and every night, the town is plagued by shapeshifting vampiric creatures, who kill and eat anyone they cross paths with.
When two vehicles crash on the outskirts of the town, the new arrivals disrupt what has been three months of safety within the town, subsequently reigniting the desperate urge to escape.
The show stars Harold Perrineau (Lost, The Matrix Reloaded), Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full Of Grace, The Affair), Eion Bailey (Fight Club, The Stand) and David Alpay (The Tudors, The Vampire Diaries), and is executive produced by The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame).
Additionally, episodes are directed by Jack Bender (Game of Thrones, The Sopranos) and Brad Turner (24, Daredevil), and they bring an incredibly creepy sense of scale to proceedings, and that is before we get to the gore. Oh my goodness, the gore in this show is off the charts, so if you’re in any way sensitive that kind of stuff, then be prepared!
Having scored a very impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes – a score rarely heard of within the horror genre – the series has already been picked up for a second season, which are in production right now.
All 10 episodes of From are available to watch with a NOW Entertainment Membership right now.
