Netflix has just added one of the most anticipated video game adaptations ever

Stephen Porzio

Producers had been trying to adapt the game since 2005.

Netflix has just added the first season of Halo, the sci-fi series based on the hugely popular video game franchise.

Since as far back as 2005, there were reports that a live-action movie adaptation of the Halo games was in the works – though in 2013, it was announced that a TV show would instead be made.

The TV series then found itself stuck in development hell for nearly a decade, before eventually premiering in 2022 on the then-new in Ireland and the UK streaming service Paramount+.

There, it ran for two seasons before being cancelled in 2024 – with some outlets speculating that the show’s high cost and low viewership was the reason behind the decision.

Now that its first season is on Netflix, perhaps Halo can find a bigger audience.

Pablo Schreiber (Den of Thieves, Orange is the New Black) starred in the sci-fi series as Master Chief, a genetically engineered super-soldier fighting for humanity in a 26th-century war with aliens.

Also part of the cast was Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo), Charlie Murphy (Love/Hate), Danny Sapani (Penny Dreadful), Fiona O’Shaughnessy (Utopia) and Natascha McElhone (Solaris).

The Halo show earned positive reviews for the most part, though some of its changes to the source material proved controversial among fans.

You can check out a sample of positive reviews for season one below:

The Daily Beast: “The Paramount+ series faithfully reproduces the video game’s world and thrills—and features a commanding lead turn from Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief.”

Sydney Morning Herald: “The premise is familiar but the effects and creature designs are great.”

Variety: “The series boasts an impressive budget used wisely, with distinct production design distinguishing one planetary location for another and spaceships zipping through endless stars. That alone lets Halo keep apace with its contemporaries.”

TheWrap: “If video game fans can keep an open mind and the series can garner enough attention from sci-fi fans less familiar with canon, Halo has the potential to be Paramount+’s flagship series.”

The first season of Halo is streaming on Netflix in Ireland and the UK right now.

This is as both of its two seasons are available on Paramount+.

If you want to watch Halo but save cash, you could use this technique with an Amazon Fire Stick to save money.

The trick is something called ‘leapfrogging’, which is a way to skip between shorter, cheaper subscriptions to watch what you want to watch without signing up for expensive year-long contracts.

For example, you can get a basic Netflix package for €8.99, and stream what you want to watch via your Fire Stick and cancel it before your next bill.

You can then take advantage of the free trials of other services without signing up for them, all from the same place on your Fire Stick, so it’s super easy and convenient.
