“Protestants hate Abba”. So far, it’s the TV moment of 2019.
Before Season 2 of Derry Girls began, JOE caught up with Nicola Coughlan (Clare), Louisa Harland (Orla), Dylan Llewellyn (James), and Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Erin) to see what their attitude towards Season 3 would be.
“Definitely, I know that we all would return for Season 3,” said Nicola Coughlan.
“There are so many more places that we could go with these characters. I have people coming up to me in the street and they’re like ‘we should do this, that, and the other’. There’s a real hunger for it and we love doing it. We all certainly hope for more seasons.”
Well, there’s some good news on that front because the first episode of the new series of Derry Girls has consolidated with 3.2m, out-performing the previous series launch and making it Channel4’s biggest audience for a comedy series since 2007.
Essentially, on the basis of those viewing figures, you could swear over the statue of the child of Prague that Season 3 will be coming.
If Channel 4 didn’t commission more seasons – and the rumoured film – they’d need to seriously wise up.

With four more episodes to come in Season 2 including a cameo from Ardal O’Hanlon, Lisa McGee’s comedy is showing no signs of slowing down and this was clearly seen in the famous Protestant vs Catholic chalkboard scene from the first episode.
At the time, people absolutely loved the ridiculous remarks like ‘Catholics watch RTÉ’ and ‘Protestants holiday in Newcastle’ but Channel 4 have now released the whole clip for your pleasure.
After watching it again, Orla’s remark that “Sister Michael, I don’t have a Protestant” is such a massively underrated moment.
Wise up and give this another watch because it’s absolutely cracker.
