Irish love for the big screen takes a downturn

While Irish people were among the most avid cinema goers in the world, it appears that our love affair for the big screen is on the wane.

The Irish Examiner reports today that in 2008, Ireland ranked second in the world for the number of people going to the cinema per head of population, second only to Iceland. On average we were going four times a year to check out the latest flicks, but that incredible high rate has dropped over the past five years.

Research carried out by HSI Screen Digest has said that Ireland has now dropped to seventh on that list with South Korea, Singapore, USA, Australia, and Hong Kong moving ahead on the list. According to their findings, Irish people now are flocking to the screens a little over three times in a year.

So far this year Iron Man III has been the biggest grossing film and has yet to finish its run, with Les Misérables and Croods coming second and third.
