An Oscar Best Picture winner is one of the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

King's Speech

It has a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Movies, movies, movies – we can’t get enough. If you’re like us, you will be glad to know Netflix just added 30 big ones to its library.

However, for more films, here are the options airing on telly this evening (1 December).

The King’s Speech – BBC Four – 9 pm

Our pick for tonight is this drama focusing on the future King George VI (Colin Firth) who, to cope with a stammer, starts seeing a speech and language therapist (Geoffrey Rush).

Based on true events, The King’s Speech tells a very emotional and uplifting story about an unexpected friendship that also happens to be set during a fascinating time in history.

Upon release in 2010, it picked up four Oscars – including Best Picture and Best Actor for Firth – and earned a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Exorcist: The Version You’ve Never Seen – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

An absolute classic we recommended earlier in the week.

Central Intelligence – ITV4 – 9pm

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Kevin Hart star in this buddy action-comedy.

Office Christmas Party – Film4 – 9 pm

An R-rated festive comedy with an ensemble cast including Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman.

Jack’s Back – Legend – 9 pm

James Spader has a dual role in this ’80s crime thriller horror about a serial killer in Los Angeles who celebrates Jack the Ripper’s 100th birthday by committing similar murders.

Beverly Hills Cop II – Sky Showcase – 10.45 pm

The great filmmaker Tony Scott helms this buddy cop action comedy sequel.

The Exorcist

Along with The King’s Speech, we would also recommend The Exorcist

Nomads – Legend – 10.55 pm

Pierce Brosnan stars in this ’80s horror that was the debut film of director John McTiernan (Die Hard, Predator).

Red – Film4 – 11.10pm

Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman are retired but extremely dangerous in this fun comic book adaptation.

Crank – ITV4 – 11.10 pm

A hitman (Jason Statham) is poisoned by the mafia and must keep his adrenaline flowing constantly to stay alive in this impressively unhinged action movie.

The Deer Hunter – BBC Two – 11.15 pm

A legendary if devasting war epic about a group of friends (including Christopher Walken and Robert De Niro) whose lives are upended by fighting in the Vietnam War.

Police Academy – Turner Classic Movies – 11.45 pm

The first in the long-running comedy series of movies.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
