Liam Neeson has said he would like to recruit fellow Irish Oscar-nominee Brendan Gleeson to be in a sequel to his new comedy, The Naked Gun.
The reboot of the beloved cop movie spoof franchise is finally out in cinemas today (Friday, 1 August), after months of anticipation.
JOE had the pleasure of interviewing Neeson, Pamela Anderson and several other cast and crew members on the sequel (You can read about or watch those conversations right here).
At one point during the chat, the Irish actor told us that another Naked Gun sequel involving him would depend on how successful the movie is at the box office.
It was then that JOE asked Neeson if there was a particular Irish actor he would like to recruit for a potential follow-up to flex their funny bone in a similar way to him.
In response, he told us:
"Oh my god, there's a few. Big Brendan Gleeson is very funny, as I'm sure you know.
"There's a few over there, yeah, but Brendan springs to mind."
During the conversation, we also asked Neeson what his favourite Irish film of all time is, to which he replied, Ryan's Daughter, the 1970 romantic drama epic from legendary filmmaker David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia).
Set in Kerry, the film stars Robert Mitchum and Sarah Miles as a married Irish couple whose lives are upended when the wife begins an affair with a British officer during World War I.
About the movie, Neeson said:
"You know, as crazy as it was and the critics lambasted it, but Ryan's Daughter by David Lean, I do watch that occasionally.
"Robert Mitchum and [the rest of] the cast, they were all in the southwest of Ireland for months on end waiting for the right storm clouds. Beautiful film."
Anderson also praised a recent Irish film involving Selkies, mythological creatures that can shapeshift between seal and human forms.
This could have been the 2014 animated movie Song of the Sea or last year's The Outrun. The latter was actually a British drama but starred Irish actress Saoirse Ronan in an IFTA-winning performance.
Liam Neeson also recommended a "beautiful" film from his Michael Collins director, Neil Jordan, about the myth of the selkie, which we believe is Ondine, the 2009 drama with Colin Farrell.
