Margot Robbie thought Barbie would never be made after seeing script

Margot Robbie discusses Barbie script

It’s one of the most-anticipated movies of the year.

The hype surrounding Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film Barbie is starting to reach boiling point after the latest trailer was released earlier this month. In fact, the excitement surrounding the film has made it almost too big to fail already.

Considering the hype, it might come as a surprise that Margot Robbie, who stars as the eponymous doll, thought the upcoming comedy would never have a chance of getting made.

“The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was, ‘Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day,’” Robbie told BAFTA. “’Because they are never going to let us make this movie.’ But they did.”

Luckily, someone thought it would be a great idea to turn Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s script into something and the world is a better place for it. We’ll all be there on day one of Barbie’s release – no excuses. As for the plot though, we’re still in the dark and Robbie, who also produces, is giving nothing away.

When pushed for details, the Australian actor replied with a simple, “can’t tell ya!”

From the trailers alone, we can’t get a great read on the plot, but it will follow Barbie being expelled from Barbieland for being a less than perfect-looking doll, setting off for the human world to find true happiness.

Ryan Gosling stars as Ken and there will also be various other Barbies and Kens, including Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Issa Rae, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu and Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan. Will Ferrell and Michael Cera also star, with Helen Mirren narrating.

While you’re waiting for Barbie to release, you can pass the time by creating your very own Barbie poster to show everyone just how excited you are.

Barbie arrives in Irish cinemas on Friday 21 July, the exact same date as Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy, creating a box-office battle for the ages.
