Artists, cats and superheroes all in one…

JOE are big fans of Tim Burton’s films, but we have felt that some of his more recent efforts have become a bit generic.

That’s why we’re delighted to see that his new film, Big Eyes, doesn’t conform to any of the following Burton rules: 1) the main character is a lovable but misunderstood goth, 2) the story is set in a make believe goth world or 3) Johnny Depp is cast in the main role… presumably as some eccentric goth.

Big Eyes is a biopic of the artist Margaret Keane, whose work was famous in the 50s and 60s because it featured pictures of big-eyed children. Unfortunately, her husband took all the credit for much of her work which led to an eventual lawsuit and the pair of them falling out. Seems about right.

The supremely-talented duo of Amy Adams and Christoph ‘that’s a bingo’ Waltz lead the cast and this trailer looks like a welcome departure for Burton.

There were very few positives to take away from the cinematic turd that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but Ryan Reynolds’ character Deadpool was definitely one of them.

We’re big admirers of Van Wilder himself, so is the entire female population it seems, and we’re delighted to see that a stand alone Deadpool film will be released on 12 December 2016.

What’s even better is that Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are the two men responsible for fleshing out the script. Reynolds has previously been extremely supportive of the idea of any film and we’re certain that he will pick up the sword once again.

It seems that the positive online reaction from this test footage has finally managed to convince studio bosses. Good on them because no one delivers deadpan one-liners quite like him.

Finally, two of the JOE writers have an intense dislike for cats – cue the inevitable backlash – but they also have a huge amount of love for the wonderfully cynical Aubrey Plaza.

Imagine their confusion today then with the news that the Parks & Recreation star is set to provide the voice for the upcoming Grumpy Cat movie.

This seems like a match made in heaven, take a look at the wonderfully cynical Plaza in work.
