An extremely cool ’80s action thriller is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Black Rain

It’s from a legendary filmmaker.

Staying in because of the cold weather? Looking for a good movie to watch?

Well, Amazon Prime Video just added added 25 big ones.

However, for more options, here are the films airing on TV this Tuesday night (13 December).

Mile 22 – Film4 – 9pm

A poorly cast Mark Wahlberg leads this action thriller that is essentially Sicario but sillier and nowhere near as good.

The Other Guys – ITV4 – 9pm

In contrast, Wahlberg is excellent in this very funny buddy cop action comedy that he stars in opposite Will Ferrell.

Definitely, Maybe – Comedy Central – 9pm

Ryan Reynolds stars in this well-reviewed 2008 rom-com.

Empire State – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

This average crime drama follows two childhood friends (Liam Hemsworth and Michael Angarano) who rob an armored car repository and the NYPD officer (Dwayne Johnson) who stands in their way.

The Rezort – Legend – 9pm

A British horror that revolves around a safari park offering paying guests the opportunity to kill as many zombies as they please after an outbreak.

Initiation – Horror Xtra – 9pm

This 2020 US slasher set on a college campus got some decent reviews upon its release.

Our pick for tonight is 1989’s Black Rain

Spider-Man 2 – Sky Showcase – 9.30pm

The one in which Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) must deal with an existential crisis and the villainous Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina).

Arguably the best superhero film ever made.

Universal Soldier – Legend – 10.50pm

This fun ’90s sci-fi action flick sees Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren face-off as US soldiers killed in Vietnam but brought back to life for a secret military programme.

Black Rain – Film4 – 10.55pm

Our pick for tonight, this ’80s flick focuses on two NYPD officers (Andy Garcia and Michael Douglas) who arrest a member of the Yakuza (Yūsaku Matsuda) in New York and must escort him back to Japan.

Once there, however, he escapes and the two officers find themselves dragged deeper and deeper into the Japanese underworld.

Directed by the great Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner), Black Rain is a cut above many other action thrillers of its era thanks to its fish-out-of-water premise, slick visuals, crackling dialogue and excellent performances from both its American and Japanese cast members.

The Expendables – Turner Classic Movies – 11pm

Sylvester Stallone directs and stars in this 2010 throwback to older action flicks.

The Vatican Tapes – Horror Xtra – 11pm

A supernatural horror made by one of the directors behind the Crank films.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
