The movie saw Domhnall Gleeson team up with an Oscar-nominated Irish filmmaker.

This week, we’ve written about 15 big movies added to Netflix and one of the best sci-fi films of last year landing on Disney+.

But if you need more to watch, here are the movies on TV tonight (Wednesday, 17 January).

Independence Day: Resurgence – Film4 – 9 pm.

The long-awaited but sadly forgettable sequel to the ’90s sci-fi classic.

Alive – Legend Xtra – 9 pm.

This 2018 horror about a severely injured man and woman who are held captive by a sadistic caretaker earned solid reviews upon release.

Law Abiding Citizen – Sky Showcase – 10 pm.

Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx star in this action thriller about a man (Butler) who decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets one of his family’s killers free.

Rabid – Legend Xtra – 10.50 pm.

A so-so remake of acclaimed filmmaker David Cronenberg’s ’70s cult body horror of the same name.

A Star is Born – BBC One – 11.10 pm.

“In the sha-ha, sha-hallow…”

The Little Stranger – Film4 – 11.20 pm.

Our pick for tonight is this Irish gothic horror drama set in 1940s England about a doctor named Faraday (Domhnall Gleeson) called to treat a maid at a dilapidated country house where his mother use to work.

Through caring for the maid, Faraday grows closer to the Ayers family who own the house (including Charlotte Rampling, Ruth Wilson and Will Poulter). However, strange occurrences begin to plague the builidng.

Based on an acclaimed novel by Sarah Waters (Fingersmith), The Little Stranger was Irish director Lenny Abrahamson’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning drama Room.

Its uniformly excellent performances, its gloomy dread-inducing atmosphere and the truly unique way it represents ghosts make it well worth seeking out.

The Little Stranger is also available to rent via the Sky Store. Check out its trailer right here:

Thelma – Film4 – 1.35am.

If you’re still up, this 2017 Norwegian coming-of-age supernatural thriller from the director of The Worst Person in the World and starring Succession’s Eili Harboe is excellent.
