Devastating news for fans of The OA.

On Monday evening, streaming giant Netflix announced that it had cancelled its sci-fi series The OA.

The show, which has won fans for its creativity and downright strangeness, is now on the ropes, with those behind it (and its fans) appealing to other networks to pick it up.

It was confirmed by its creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij back in 2018 that five seasons had been planned for The OA, meaning that the story is still only two-fifths of the way through.

Netflix has seen a raft of cancellations in recent weeks, having axed animated comedy Tuca & Birdie last week, as well as the Kiefer Sutherland-fronted political thriller Designated Survivor.

Earlier this year, it also got rid of Santa Clarita Diet.

Creator Brit Marling shared a lengthy statement on her Instagram page, saying: “While we cannot finish this story, I can promise you we will tell others.” A petition to save the show has been launched.

Over the last few years, Netflix has also cancelled multiple Marvel shows – Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, Daredevil – in anticipation of Disney launching its own streaming service.
