Netflix confirms Will Smith will return for a Bright sequel

Ready for round two?

Following the success of fantasy blockbuster Bright, Netflix has confirmed a sequel, with Will Smith, Joel Edgerton and director David Ayer all set to return.

Ayer will also pen the sequel, taking over scripting duties from original writer Max Landis.

Our own Rory Cashin may have argued that Bright was the most fun Will Smith had enjoyed onscreen in quite some time, but he was also quick to note that it “might not even be a good movie”.

Throw in a 28% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and you could understand why some would pour cold water on a sequel.

Perhaps that 88% audience score is the more important number in question.

That, and the information that the $90 million Netflix exclusive became the service’s highest-viewed film ever in its first week of release in December.

It also stands tall as the platform’s “#1 movie” in over 190 countries, with more people viewing it internationally than in the United States.
