Netflix has just quietly added 24 big movies to its library

Rory Cashin

Horror, comedy, action and Oscar-winning dramas are all on the menu.

The below list isn’t even including the 12 kids movies that have been added to the streaming service’s platform this week.

Loads of different types of movies to choose from below, starting with…

A BEAUTIFUL MIND

This four-time Oscar-winning biopic sees Russell Crowe as brilliant-but-troubled mathematician John Nash who sees his life take a turn for the worst when he accepts a top secret government job.

BOILING POINT

The most stressful film you’ll watch all year.

THE BUBBLE

Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) directs this comedy about a group of actors (including David Duchovny, Karen Gillan, Leslie Mann and Pedro Pascal) trying to make a big budget action movie under the constraints of the pandemic. 34% on Metacritic feels about right.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME

Over one long summer in Italy, a teenager (Timothée Chalamet) finds himself being increasingly attracted to an older man (Armie Hammer) who is staying with his family. One of the most loved LGBTQ+ movies of recent years.

CASE 39

Renée Zellweger stars in somewhat dull horror movie. 21% on Rotten Tomatoes.

CHAPPIE

From the director of District 9 (great) and Elysium (not great), this is basically RoboCop meets Short Circuit, but with South African hip hop group Die Antwoord in leading roles alongside Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver. Not without its charm, but still incredibly messy.

THE GOLDFINCH

John Crowley (Intermission, Brooklyn) directs this adaptation of the much-loved novel about a young boy who is taken in by a rich family after his mother is killed in a bombing at the MOMA in New York. A beautiful looking movie, but holy moly, so boring.

GROWN UPS & GROWN UPS 2

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

IN GOOD COMPANY

Dennis Quaid is an ad exec who has to deal with a new boss (Topher Grace) who happens to be half his age, and is also dating his daughter (Scarlet Johansson). A very watchable, entertaining comedy-drama.

THE INTOUCHABLES

Remade as The Upside in the States, this infinitely superior French original tells a layered, emotional story of a rich quadriplegic who hires a young man from the projects as his new caregiver.

THE KITCHEN

Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss and Tiffany Haddish star in this crime drama about three women who continue running their husbands criminal activities after they’ve been put in prison. Despite the star power involved, it isn’t very good.

THE LEGEND OF ZORRO

The Mask Of Zorro was great. This sequel wasn’t.

LOOPER

Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt headline this time-travel action-thriller about assassins and a highly organised criminal underworld. A very, very good sci-fi movie.

PET SEMATARY

This 1989 original adaptation of the Stephen King book is much camper but also much creepier than the 2019 attempt.

PIXELS

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

THE SKELETON KEY

Kate Hudson stars in this creepy movie about a hospice nurse working in spooky New Orleans plantation house. Has a very decent surprise in the third act which elevates it a bit.

THE SPARKS BROTHERS

One of the best music documentaries ever made.

THE TAX COLLECTOR

Written and directed by David Ayer (who wrote Training Day and directed Suicide Squad), this frankly awful Shia LeBeouf-starring crime-thriller isn’t really worth your time.

TAXI DRIVER

Scorsese and De Niro’s best pairing? Discuss.

WARM BODIES

A remix of the teen rom-com adds in some extra zom, when an undead boy (Nicholas Hault) starts to fall in love with a still-alive teenage girl (Teresa Palmer). It’s actually pretty decent.

WINDFALL

Jesse Plemons, Lily Collins and Jason Segel star in this home-invasion thriller. A Netflix original, it is easy to watch, and equally easy to forget.

THE WITCH

One of the most original horror movies of recent years, centred around an isolated family in 1630s New England who find themselves torn apart by black magic.

THE WOMEN

Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing and Jada Pinkett Smith star in this below-par comedy drama about a group of women trying to have it all. It wants so badly to be Sex & The City.
