A footballer that scored one of the most beautiful goals of all time and then, one of the most infamous. A genius. A villain. An icon. There's only one Diego Armando Maradona. Simply put, very few footballers have been as captivating and enthralling as the wonderful Argentinian and if his gripping life story isn't enough, you'll be delighted to know that the new documentary is being directed by Asif Kapadia. Believe the hype because Kapadia previously made Senna - one of the greatest documentaries in recent memory - and the Academy Award-winning Amy. On 5 July 1984, Diego Maradona arrived in Naples for a world-record fee and for seven years, all hell broke loose.
The world’s most celebrated football genius and the most dysfunctional city in Europe were a perfect match for each other. Maradona was blessed on the field but cursed off it.
As the charismatic Argentine led Napoli to their first-ever title, his godlike status in the city was instantly cemented.
It was the stuff of dreams but there was a price.
Maradona could do as he pleased whilst performing miracles on the pitch, but when the magic faded he became a prisoner of the city.
The film will be showing at the Cannes Film Festival and it's set to be released on 14 June.
