Nic Cage talks about huge scene cut from latest movie

Rory Cashin

Renfield

“Had I been producing the movie, that sequence would be in the movie.”

Somewhat unbelievably, Renfield is the first major Hollywood production that Nicolas Cage has starred in in quite some time. Not including his voice work in the likes of The Croods or Into The Spider-Verse, we haven’t actually seen Cage in a major movie since maybe 2011’s Ghost Rider sequel.

Since then, he’s either been in A LOT of direct-to-DVD/streaming titles, or the movies that have grabbed our united attention (Mandy, Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) have all been smaller, independent releases.

So when JOE sat down with Cage and his Renfield co-star Nicholas Hault to talk about their new action-horror-comedy, we were surprised to learn that there was quite a huge sequence left out of the finished cut. Check out our interview in full right here:

During the chat, we asked Cage and Hoult about the most physically demanding scene in the movie, and it turns out for Hoult, that scene was something we might never see, unless it gets added as a bonus scene upon its Blu-Ray/DVD release (remember those??).

Hoult kicks off by telling us: “Physically, the most demanding one actually didn’t end up in the movie. We did a whole dance sequence, a fantasy dance sequence number, after Renfield first meets Rebecca, Awkwafina’s character. And from that, there is this sequence where Renfield has a huge dance with breakdancing cockroaches and flying worms and all these things. Which was a long night shoot, doing very difficult physical [moves], and it took a long time to learn the choreography.”

Cage then added:

“I saw the sequence, and its magnificent. He’s a hell of a dancer, and he worked his ass off. It was an incredible sequence. Had I been producing the movie, that sequence would be in the movie. It was just a marvel to look at.”

Renfield is in Irish cinemas right now, and you can also check out our chats with Cage’s co-star Ben Schwartz, where he talks about wanting to bring his new comedy show to Ireland, as well as acting with Cage being exactly what you’d hope/expect.
