Peaky Blinders star discusses the idea of Tommy Shelby meeting Adolf Hitler in Season 6

A recent interview with the show’s creator has started plenty of rumours…

As always, if you haven’t seen the most recent season of Peaky Blinders, consider this to be your spoiler alert warning.

Look away now.

As the season finale for Season 5 of Peaky Blinders unfolded, did anyone else think that Steven Knight might be tempted to ‘do a Tarantino?’

Basically, just like the finale of Inglorious Basterds when Adolf Hitler died in a hail of bullets and flames, would Peaky Blinders rewrite history and kill off Oswald Mosley?

The answer was a resounding no.

In fact, as Season 6 approaches, it’s the fate of Tommy Shelby that looks far more insecure – more about that here.

While nothing official has been announced by the BBC about a new season, the show’s director Anthony Byrne has said that he plans on filming Season 6 early next year.  March has been rumoured as the starting date.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the show’s creator, Steven Knight, confirmed that the character of Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) will be returning for Season 6 and that the producers are currently looking to cast an actor for the role of Diana Mitford, Mosley’s second wife.

When Mitford married Mosley in 1936, their marriage took place at the home of Joseph Goebbels ( Reich Minister of Propaganda of Nazi Germany) in Berlin. Adolf Hitler was the guest of honour.

In Season 5, viewers got to see Tommy Shelby chatting with Winston Churchill and during a recent Reddit AMA, Knight and Cillian Murphy were asked if the show would feature any more famous historical figures.

Knight replied by saying: “In Series 6, there will be a figure from history who may surprise people.”

Given the time period that the show is set in, this famous historical figure could be anyone but the real life connections between Oswald Mosley and Adolf Hitler can’t be ignored.

Peaky Blinders Season 6

Knight has consistently said that he plans on ending the show when WWII is declared and the first air sirens are heard (1939). The wedding between Mosley and Mitford took place in 1936.

By this logic, it’s entirely possible that Tommy Shelby could cross paths with Adolf Hitler at Mosley’s wedding and during a recent interview with Uproxx, Sam Claflin talked about what the future might have in store,

“I’ve heard rumblings (about Season 6), but whether that includes me, I genuinely don’t know. I know there is a season six being written. I think episodes one to three have been written, after speaking to Steven Knight, but he’s keeping his cards very close to his chest. And I’m so glad that he is because as a fan of the show, I don’t want anything to be spoiled for me.

“Mosley lived a very, very long life. I think he died in the ’80s. So, unless they completely mess with history, I don’t see him dying. But whether the next series includes, is not for me to decide, unfortunately. If it was, I’d be in every scene.”

With regards to the potential meeting of Tommy Shelby and Adolf Hitler, Claflin is very much in favour of the two meeting.

“Not long after the ’30s, he married Lady Diana Mitford, who herself was quite a notorious human being. Their wedding was at Joseph Goebbels’ summer house, one of the nastiest Nazis ever, and Adolf Hitler was in attendance, so that is a life event I would like to portray on Peaky Blinders. Tommy Shelby and Hitler in a room together would be quite eventful.”

We shall wait and see what Peaky Blinders Season 6 has in store.
