A Stranger Things play is coming to the West End

Simon Kelly

Stranger Things fans rejoice, a new original play is coming to the stage based on the hit Netflix show.

Based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers (the creators of the Netflix show), Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, will receive its world premiere in late 2023 at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End.

The plot details of the upcoming stage play are:

Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.

Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft  to a whole new dimension, this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the  Stranger Things story – and may hold the key to the end.

The play is written by Kate Trefry and directed by Stephen Daldry with co-direction by Justin Martin. The play will go on sale this spring, details of which will be announced later this month. The Duffer Brothers act as creative producers, with 21 Laps as associate producer. Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions also produce.

Priority access to tickets will be given to fans who register from today at strangerthingsonstage.com. So, if you’re a fan, we highly recommend getting your name down on that list!

Season 4 of the massively popular sci-fi show released last year, split into two parts throughout the summer. Earlier last year, the Duffer Brothers revealed that the upcoming season 5 will be the last in the series. Filming for the final season will begin in May.

From the details shared, the play will focus on a young Hopper and Joyce in Hawkins two decades before the events of the show. Another big character in the play is Henry Creel, who appeared for the first time as an important part of season 4.
