Stallone will be reprising his role in the sequel that comes from one of the producers of the Fast & Furious movies.

Sylvester Stallone’s action thriller Cliffhanger is getting a reboot, with the Hollywood legend set to reprise his role from the original.

Stallone starred in the 1993 movie as Gabriel ‘Gabe’ Walker, a former mountain rescuer traumatised after a deadly incident who is persuaded to go assist a group of stranded hikers. However, upon meeting them, Gabe realises that they are actually a gang of violent criminals (led by John Lithgow) that need help locating millions of stolen dollars missing over the mountain after a plane crash.

Directed by Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2), Cliffhanger earned solid reviews from critics, with critics singling out its tense opening scene and the movie’s impressive stunt work for praise. The film also was a hit at the box office, where it earned back more than triple its budget.

Stallone will return for the Cliffhanger reboot

As reported in multiple outlets, director Ric Roman Waugh (Greenland, Shot Caller) will helm the reboot from a script by Mark Bianculli (Hunters), with Stallone set to return in the part of Gabe. Casting for other roles in the movie is also said to be underway.

In a statement, Waugh wrote of the sequel:

“Growing up with the biggest action films of the ’80s and ’90s, working on many of them myself, Cliffhanger was by far one of my favorite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true. It’s going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”

Meanwhile, producer on the reboot Neal H. Moritz (the Fast & Furious franchise) added:

“I’ll never forget the thrill I felt watching Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger. I am incredibly excited to be working with him and Ric Waugh to continue the story of Gabe Walker and introduce this iconic story to a new generation of filmgoers around the world.”

The original Cliffhanger is available to rent at home right now on Google Play, Apple TV and the Sky Store.
