Our TV movie pick for tonight (Saturday, 20 September) is The Creator, the 2023 sci-fi epic from co-writer and director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Jurassic World Rebirth, Rogue One).
The film takes place in a near future in which a nuclear warhead was detonated over Los Angeles, leading to humanity becoming embroiled in a war against artificial intelligence and the robots it powers.
Amidst the conflict, a former US Army sergeant and undercover operative named Joshua (John David Washington, Tenet) is approached by the military to join a mission to destroy a new and extremely powerful weapon engineered by the AI.
Travelling to 'New Asia', an area which has embraced artificial intelligence, Joshua and his strike team invade a compound believed to hold the weapon. Yet, they discover only a robot in the form of a young girl (Madeleine Yuna Voyles).
Joshua is then ordered to kill the robot child, but cannot bring himself to do so. As such, the former sergeant turns against his team and goes on the run with the girl.
The Creator was written by Edwards, alongside Chris Weitz (AfrAId, Murderbot).
Its cast also features Allison Janney (I, Tonya), Amar Chadha-Patel (The Decameron), Gemma Chan (Humans), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), Marc Menchaca (Ozark), Ralph Ineson (The Fantastic Four: First Steps), Sturgill Simpson (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Veronica Ngo (The Old Guard).
Upon release, the movie earned rave reviews from critics for its imaginative vision of the future, its incredible robot character designs and the epic scale of its set-pieces. Those qualities are all the more impressive given that the sci-fi was made on the relatively low (for Hollywood!) budget of $80 million.
That said, some reviewers took issue with its screenplay, for its slightly muddled storytelling and thin characters.
Nominated for two Oscars - in the Best Sound and Best Visual Effects categories - The Creator is on TV tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm.
The film will also be available to stream on Channel 4's website after it airs.
