The new show about the Getty family and that notorious kidnapping looks excellent

From the director of Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire. Essential TV.

Throughout awards season, you’ve probably heard Ridley Scott’s new film, All the Money in the World, being mentioned. Aside from their decision to replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer, the drama has been earning some solid reviews but as reported previously, Danny Boyle is also developing a TV show about the same infamous story.

In case you’re not familiar, oil tycoon Jean Paul Getty refused to pay a ransom to kidnappers for his grandson. It’s estimated that Getty was worth $1.2 billion in 1966.

In Trust, the Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, along with his frequent collaborator Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) will tell this mysterious true crime story where kidnapping, deceit and a family that’s falling apart are all at play.

Equal parts family history, dynastic saga and an examination of the corrosive power of money, Trust explores the complexities at the heart of every family, rich or poor. Told over multiple seasons and spanning the twentieth century, the series begins in 1973 with the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III (Harris Dickinson), an heir to the Getty oil fortune, by the Italian mafia in Rome. His captors banked on a multi-million-dollar ransom. After all, what rich family wouldn’t pay for the return of a loved one?

The cast is excellent with Donald Sutherland starring as oil baron J. Paul Getty alongside Hilary Swank, Brendan Fraser, and Michael Esper.

If you’re a fan of shows like The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story and Fargo, this is for you.

Trust premieres in the US on Sunday, March 25 on FX.
