The Unholy Trinity, a new Western starring Pierce Brosnan (the James Bond franchise) and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), has just been made available to watch at home.
Streaming now through Paramount+, the movie is set against the turbulent backdrop of 1870s Montana. Its story begins moments before the execution of Isaac Broadway (Tim Daly, The Sopranos), as he gives his estranged son, Henry (Brandon Lessard, Robert the Bruce), an impossible task.
This is to murder the man who framed him for a crime he didn't commit.
Intent on fulfilling that promise, Henry travels to the remote town of Trinity, where an unexpected turn of events leaves him caught between Gabriel Dove (Brosnan), the town's upstanding new sheriff, and a mysterious figure named St. Christopher (Jackson).
Directed by Richard Gray (Robert the Bruce), the cast of The Unholy Trinity also features Beau Knapp (The Nice Guys), David Arquette (Scream), Ethan Peck (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds), Katrina Bowden (30 Rock), Q'orianka Kilcher (The Alienist) and Veronica Ferres (Red Sonja).
Upon its cinema release in the States earlier this year, the film earned mixed reviews from critics, with some describing it as "by-the-books" and "familiar".
That said, certain reviewers noted that, at a time when Westerns are rare, it is good to have a new entry in the genre with stars of Brosnan and Jackson's calibre.
You can read a sample of some of the positive reviews for The Unholy Trinity below:
Movies in Focus: "It’s an entertaining entry into the genre, and while it doesn’t break a whole lot of new ground, there is enjoyment to be had seeing seasoned pros like Brosnan and Jackson spit out tough guy lines while brandishing a six-shooter."
RogerEbert.com: "The movie’s not a barn-burner or future classic, but new Westerns are thin on the ground these days, and this ultimately is a better-than-decent one."
San Jose Mercury News: "It’s hardly perfect, but if you’re looking for an old-fashioned shoot-’em-up, put this one into your rental corral."
Variety: "Provides more than enough rapid-fire shootouts, impressive stunt choreography, shifting allegiances and moderately clever plot twists to keep things interesting."
The Unholy Trinity is streaming in Ireland and the UK on Paramount+ now.
