There were Irish winners aplenty at the British Independent Film Awards last night

We're only brilliant aren't we?

We’re only brilliant aren’t we?

2014 has been a good year for Irish films and the quality on screen has been reflected with bright and shiny statues for some of the best Irish talent.

Brendan Gleeson’s superb performance in Calvary was acknowledged with the Best Actor award for his performance as Fr James Lavelle.

Andrew Scott won’t forget this week in a hurry after the newest cast member of Bond 24, now known as Spectre, won the best supporting actor gong for his work in Pride.

We always hoped that they would actually whack a gong at these ceremonies when the winning actors were announced.

Deliverance director John Boorman was awarded the Special Jury Prize which makes JOE very happy considering the amount of help that his films have given the Irish film industry and Ardmore Studios over the years.

While Lenny Abrahamson didn’t win best director for Frank, his long-term collaborator, Stephen Rennicks, won the award for Technical Achievement in Music, while Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan won the award for Best Screenplay.

Well done to all the winners especially  those lads for best screenplay because Frank was wonderfully surreal and odd, just like some of Frank Sidebottom’s real-life interviews.

Here’s what happened when JOE caught up with Lenny Abrahamson and Domnhall Gleeson when Frank was released.
