Coming from the creator of Yellowstone and 1883, the Western thriller features an Oscar-winner and one of the stars of Love/Hate.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 29 August) is Those Who Wish Me Dead, the 2021 Western thriller from co-writer and director Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, 1883).

Based on the novel of the same name by Michael Koryta, the modern-day-set film stars Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted) as Hannah, a wildland firefighter.

Struggling after failing to prevent the deaths of several people in a blaze, she is posted at a remote fire lookout tower in Montana.

One day, while out on patrol, Hannah stumbles upon Connor (Finn Little), a traumatised 12-year-old boy.

It turns out that the child is being pursued by two relentless assassins, Jack (Aidan Gillen, Love/Hate) and Patrick (Nicholas Hoult, Superman). The pair killed the boy's forensic accountant father (Jake Weber, Dawn of the Dead) after he stumbled upon some information that the killers' employer wanted hidden.

As such, Hannah must protect Connor from the vicious assassins, with the killers subsequently setting a massive forest fire to cover their tracks.

Also featuring two brilliant supporting performances from Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) and Medina Senghore (The Walking Dead) as Connor's sheriff uncle and aunt, Those Who Wish Me Dead was released during the Covid pandemic - meaning it didn't get the audience in theatres that it deserved.

That said, we at JOE believe it has the chance to become a cable or streaming classic. This is thanks to its great cast, its extremely tense cat-and-mouse thrills and its genuinely jaw-dropping action set-pieces.

Those Who Wish Me Dead is on TV tonight on RTÉ2 at 9.35pm. It is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play, the Sky Store and Rakuten TV.
