Tom Hardy fans, the wait is nearly over.

Given the fact that Venom has been a stalwart in the Spider-Man comics for over three decades, plenty of people were curious which direction Ruben Fleischer’s (Zombieland, 30 Minutes Or Less) film would take.

As previously reported, not much was known about the plot, but it was heavily rumoured to mirror the popular Lethal Protector storyline from the comics. In that comic-book, Venom goes up against the Life Foundation, a group that pushes the Venom symbiote to spawn several more variations.

Once bonded with the symbiotes they become Agony, Phage, Scream, Riot, and Lasher, as hell breaks loose.

Well, the official synopsis for Venom has been released and here it is.

As a journalist, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) has been trying to take down the notorious founder of the Life Foundation, genius Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) – and that obsession ruined his career and his relationship with his girlfriend, Anne Weying (Michelle Williams).

Upon investigating one of Drake’s experiments, the alien Venom merges with Eddie’s body, and he suddenly has incredible new superpowers, as well as the chance to do just about whatever he wants. Twisted, dark, unpredictable, and fuelled by rage, Venom leaves Eddie wrestling to control dangerous abilities that he also finds empowering and intoxicating. As Eddie and Venom need each other to get what they’re looking for, they become more and more intertwined — where does Eddie end and Venom begin?

Aside from these plot details, the studio also released a little clip which features Eddie Brock visiting the Life Foundation and making a very memorable impression on Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed).

Somehow, we don’t think these two characters will be friends by the end of the film.

Venom is released on 5 October and here’s a sneak peak at what’s in store.
