We thought hoverboards weren’t supposed to be released until 2015?

The Japanese-American magician, Sero, better known to his mammy as Cyril Takayama, recently appeared on a primetime broadcast on Japan’s Fuji TV where he wowed onlookers with what he claimed was a real-life hoverboard from Back to the Future.

All was going well for Sero, until one of the show’s celebrity guests, 19-year-old actress Airi Taira (pictured below), almost ruined the fun for everyone by saying, “I’ve seen this trick before on another TV show!” Cue awkward smiling from Sero and the on-the-scene reporter.

Now, we don’t want to ruin the mystique, but we’re fairly certain (in fact, we’re 100% certain) that Sero was attached to the van via a retractable pole running though his sleeve. It’s also pretty clear that the hoverboard was attached to Sero’s foot the entire time he was ‘hovering’.

Sero manages to dodge the heat by letting the presenter touch his arm to ensure there was no trickery involved with the, eh, trick, but when he goes to inspect the van, the magician quickly finishes up the segment.

“You’ve all seen Back to the Future, right? I’ve made it a reality!” Says Sero at the end of the interview.

Looks like we still have to wait another six months before we finally see a real hoverboard, unless, of course, Back to the Future was lying to us all these years…
