Fair play to Don Hertzfeldt for making us stop and say, ‘what the actual f*ck’, while watching the latest episode of The Simpsons…

We thought that French cartoonist Sylvain Chomet had created the weirdest Simpsons couch gag that we had ever seen, but that has now been overtaken by the first couch gag from the latest season.

Created by American cartoonist and independent filmmaker, Don Hertzfeldt, the couch gag sees Homer sitting on the sofa with a time travelling device. Homer takes us back to the past where we see him morph into his early-90s hand drawn styling before heading to the future; Sun Date September 36.4, 10,535 to be precise.

According to this gag, the Simpsons future looks pretty, eh… bleak, and it’s certainly not like anything we’ve ever seen in Springfield before. Let’s hope they cancel the show before it gets like that…

Here’s a look at Hertzfeldt’s animated short, ‘Rejected’, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2001. Again, it’s a bit weird, but it will help to explain what’s going on in the Simpsons gag if you’ve never heard of Hertzfeldt or his work.
