Voyagers, an underrated 2021 sci-fi thriller starring Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin, Thirteen Lives), is airing on TV tonight (Friday, 2 January).
Written and directed by Neil Burger (Limitless), the movie is set in a near-future in which the Earth is becoming increasingly uninhabitable due to climate change.
As such, a group of teenage astronauts are sent into space on a decades-long mission to colonise a distant planet that may support human life.
These teens are led by an adult commander (Farrell), whose job is to guide the young voyagers through the journey's early stage.
When the fresh-faced astronauts, however, discover disturbing secrets about the mission, it leads them to defy their training and “begin to explore their most primitive natures”.
"As life on the ship descends into chaos, they're consumed by fear, lust, and the hunger for power," the plot synopsis adds.
For the most part, Voyagers earned mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, with many finding that there wasn't much originality or surprise to how its "Lord of the Flies in space" story played out.
While we understand such remarks, we'd argue, however, that the film's stylish direction, sleek visuals and excellent supporting cast full of young stars make it a solid B-movie.
Alongside Farrell, the cast of the sci-fi includes Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk), Lily Rose-Depp (Nosferatu) and Tye Sheridan (The Order) in the lead roles, with supporting turns by Archie Madekwe (Lurker), Archie Renaux (Alien: Romulus), Quintessa Swindell (Prime Target) and Viveik Kalra (Blinded by the Light).
Voyagers is airing on TV tonight on the channel Sky Sci-Fi at 11.35pm. It is also currently available to stream on the service NOW.
