Your weekend viewing is sorted.

As well all know, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest movie of 2019, both so far, and likely will remain in the position come the end of December (sorry, The Rise of Skywalker).

In just a week, it has made close to $1.7 billion worldwide, nearly 50% more than the closest box office competitor; another Disney/Marvel movie, Captain Marvel, which has made a little over $1.1 billion to date.

However, in third place in the worldwide box office with $700 million so far, is a movie most people (outside of China) have probably never heard of, but listening to the plot synopsis, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was created in a Hollywood lab.

The Wandering Earth begins with our sun dying out, as people all around the world build giant planet thrusters to move Earth out of its orbit and to sail it to a new star system.

Yes, it is going to require a lot of disbelief suspension, because this is the kind of sci-fi-action that makes Armageddon look like a slow-paced drama.

The 2,500-year-long journey comes with unexpected dangers (obviously), and in order to save humanity, a group of young people in this age of a wandering Earth come out boldly and must fight hard for everyone’s survival.

If nothing else, it is incredible to see what China has managed to do with a $50 million budget (in comparison, Avengers: Endgame reportedly cost over $350 million to produce, before any advertising or promotion work), and if you’re looking for something completely different in the action genre, then this should be right up your intergalactic alley.

The Wandering Earth is available to watch on Netflix right now.
