Prime Video has just added War of the Worlds, a new movie adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic sci-fi novel of the same.
The 1898 book about an attempted alien invasion of Earth has been adapted for the screen several times, perhaps most notably by director Steven Spielberg and star Tom Cruise in a 2005 film.
There was also an Oscar-winning 1953 movie version and a Gabriel Byrne-starring TV series version that ran for three seasons between 2019 and 2022.
This new adaptation, however, puts a modern twist on the source material. It's a screenlife film, meaning the events of the story are presented entirely via computer, tablet or smartphone screens.
Other popular examples of screenlife movies include Searching and Unfriended, which share a producer with War of the Worlds in Timur Bekmambetov.
War of the Worlds 2025 stars Ice Cube (21 Jump Street) as Will Radford, a top cyber-security analyst for Homeland Security who tracks potential threats to national security through a mass surveillance program.
"One day, an attack by an unknown entity leads him to question whether the government is hiding something from him… and from the rest of the world."
Also known as War of the Worlds: Revival, the movie co-stars Andrea Savage (Tulsa King), Clark Gregg (The Avengers), Devon Bostick (Oppenheimer), Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) and Iman Benson (The Midnight Club).
The film was originally supposed to be distributed by Universal Pictures before being quietly released on Prime Video - something which may not bode well for its quality.
War of the Worlds 2025 was also not shown to critics, though the early reviews trickling out since dropping on Prime Video do not seem to be positive for the most part.
That said, if you're a sci-fi fan or just someone on the hunt for an 89-minute movie, you may be interested in the remake.
