Why you should be watching… The Last Dance

The Last Dance

“That was God disguised as Michael Jordan.”

Considering we’re all spending a lot of time indoors these days, the JOE team has picked out viewing recommendations for TV series, old and new, to get stuck into to keep boredom at bay.

Title: The Last Dance

Where can you watch it? Netflix

Number of seasons/episodes: Two episodes so far, two more each Monday

IMDB rating: 9.7/10

Rotten Tomatoes: 100%

Why you should watch it: You do not need to have an interest in basketball to appreciate just how good this is.

The Last Dance, a 10-part documentary series chronicling Michael Jordan’s sixth and final championship run with the Chicago Bulls, premiered on Sunday on ESPN, with the network showing the first two episodes of the series. It’s available for Irish viewers on Netflix.

Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. But since his departure from the NBA as a player – he owns a team now – Jordan hasn’t been in the limelight on any terms but his own.

Other NBA greats have remained in the public eye after retirement – Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal are two of the greats who have used television and social media to remain household names in the US, for example.

Current NBA star LeBron James uses the media and social media as well as any sports star in the world.

Then we have Michael Jordan.

Jordan has no social media. He’s not on Twitter. He’s not posting to Instagram and he’s certainly not out there doing TikTok challenges. He hasn’t written any type of memoir.

The GOAT has been withdrawn from the world to a certain extent, not regularly lending his voice to the public conversation. He still remains one of the biggest sports stars in the US to this day.

Now, it’s the first time he’s telling his story, in his own words to the public from the comfort of his – absolutely beautiful – house.

A tumbler on the table and a cigar in the hand.

Tune into the first two episodes to get a sense of how the 97/98 Chicago Bulls team was constructed, the villains, the “traveling cocaine circus”, the underpaid Scottie Pippen and the relentless desire of Jordan to win at all times.

You’ll be hooked in no time.
