If you missed the first season of arguably the best mystery show on TV, now is the time to catch up.
Yellowjackets is returning for its second season later this month, which means now is definitely the time for those who have not watched the show yet to catch up.
The series focuses on a team of New Jersey high school girls’ soccer players whose plane crashes while flying over Canada to attend a tournament in 1996. Stuck deep in the wilderness, the team members are left stranded for 19 months.
The show chronicles their attempts to stay alive, while also jumping forward in time to follow a handful of the survivors in 2021 who begin to be blackmailed by a mysterious figure for something bad that happened while they were in the wilderness.
Premiering in 2021, Yellowjackets’ first season earned rave reviews, scoring a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In particular, critics praised the show’s unique blend of different genres, its incredible performances and its unpredictably twisty storylines.
Ahead of its second season, JOE had the opportunity to speak with its main cast members Christina Ricci (Sleepy Hollow) and Melanie Lynskey (The Last of Us). During the chat, we asked the pair if there were any particular unanswered questions or mysteries from the first season for which their family or friends wanted answers.
Spoilers for Yellowjackets Season One ahead
For Ricci, her son was most concerned about the fate of Javi (Luciano Leroux), a young boy stranded in the wilderness with the football team who goes missing during the finale of season one.
“My son watched the show. I watched it next to him, fast-forwarding any really bad, inappropriate parts for children, I promise,” Ricci told JOE.
“But ever since then, he has been just full of questions. He wants to know where Javi is. It’s all: ‘Where do you think Javi is? Is Javi alive?’ Like non-stop Javi questions.
“I had to say to him all the time: ‘I don’t know, honey. I’m not one of the writers. Go ask that person over there, that’s one of the writers.'”
Meanwhile, Lynskey said her friends’ main focus was Adam (Peter Gadiot), the enigmatic man her character Shauna has an affair with throughout the first season, something which frustrated the actress as the mystery surrounding him has already been resolved.
“For me, I couldn’t believe that people were still talking about Adam. ‘Whose Adam? Who is he really?’. He’s just a dude. He’s just a guy,” Lynskey explained.
“For me, I was ready to stop talking about Adam on my group chats.”
Yellowjackets’ second season will premiere in Ireland on 24 March on Paramount+ and will see Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings) and Lauren Ambrose (Servant) added to the cast.
