The cost of attending college in Dublin has been revealed, and it’s not pretty…

Nobody in Ireland ends up with a degree without forking over a pretty sizeable sum of money…

But a recent study conducted by DIT, reported on by Dublin Live, has revealed just how much a student can expect to spend over the course of just one year studying in Dublin.

Between rent, utilities, food, travel and more, the total cost comes to roughly €12,495 per annum — just a few thousand short of the average income for somebody working part-time in Ireland.

This was including some figures such as €675 for “Social life/misc,” and we all know plenty of people from college who spent a damn sight more than €675 on social life. Let alone “misc.” Other costs included €1503 for food, €252 for utilities, €1215 for travel, €630 for books and class materials, €279 for mobile and €369 for clothes medical.

Rent is obviously the biggest killer, and respondents to the survey were paying €3843 on average across the year.

By contrast, students living at home can expect to pay significantly less than their nest-leaving counterparts. Those who take up the option of staying at home with their family pay approximately €6789 in total over the course of the year, including student fees. That figure also includes a contribution to utilities of €252, and we know plenty of lazy sods who don’t bother helping out with that…
