The government has issued a directive for all pubs in the Republic of Ireland to close in an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, the government clarified that the closure order extends to all public houses and hotel bars.

The announcement followed a meeting between the government between the Licensed Vintners Association and the Vintners Federation of Ireland, in which the organisations explained the difficulty of implementing social distancing measures in situations where “alcohol reduces personal inhibitions.”

“The government believes this is an essential public health measure given the reports of reckless behaviour by some members of the public in certain pubs last night,” the statement said. It also noted the importance of closing all pubs ahead of St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday (17 March).

While many pubs had already closed of their own volition, others had been on the receiving end of backlash after footage emerged online of many pubs ignoring social distancing protocols and mass gathering rules.

The government has also advised the public not to hold house parties.

These measures will remain in place at least until 29 March.

The statement notes that support measures for businesses and their staff were discussed but no specifics have been provided as of yet.

The status of other businesses such as restaurants as cinemas will be reviewed and subject to consultation over the coming days.

There are currently 129 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Republic of Ireland, though this number will rise with next update later this evening.
