Human remains found positively identified as Brian Laundrie

The search is now over.

The human remains that were discovered next to Brian Laundrie's belongings at the Carlton Reserve in Florida have been confirmed as his. The search for Brian, who was the only person of interest in the Gabby Petito case, has now ended after a month long manhunt. According to the FBI, his body was discovered after a backpack and notebook belonging to him were found in the reserve, with the remains close by, with dental records used to confirm it was Brian's body. "On 21 October, 2021, a comparison of dental records confirmed that the human remains found at the T Mabry Carlton Jr Memorial Reserve and Myakkahatchee Creed Environmental Park are those of Brian Laundrie," the FBI said in a statement. The Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino has confirmed that his parents had been notified. "Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the remains found yesterday in the reserve are indeed Brian’s", Bertolino said. "We have no further comment at this time and we ask that you respect the Laundrie’s privacy at this time." The attorney for Gabby's family has said that they will not be making any statements on the remains being identified until they are "emotionally ready". On Wednesday, some personal articles belonging to Brian Laundrie were discovered during a search of Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port, Florida. The environmental park is adjacent to the Carlton Reserve where Laundrie’s parents said he had left to go hiking over a month ago and never returned to their nearby home. Brian disappeared on 14 September, three days after Gabby’s family reported her missing when he returned to Florida without his fiancée. The couple had taken a road trip across the country, starting in New York in July, when Gabby's family lost touch with her in late August and Brian showed up alone on 1 September. Gabby's body was discovered in Bridger Teton National Forest on 19 September, and confirmed to have died by homicide two days later, with the cause of death being strangulation.
