Irish bank holiday set to be a scorcher as high pressure moves in

Dust off the barbeque.

Ireland has had a fairly miserable end to the month of May, with thunderstorms and washouts aplenty, but an area of high pressure is approaching at just the right time.

Met Éireann have said that temperatures are set to improve, with some areas rising to 22C.

With high pressure setting in towards the end of the week and looking like it may be hard to budge, bookies Ladbrokes have slashed odds on it being the hottest June on record, going from 6/1 to 4/1.

Meanwhile, it is just 5/6 that the hottest day of the year so far is recorded this weekend.

Keeping tabs on the outlook for the upcoming bank holiday weekend, weather expert Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather on Twitter/X said: "The high pressure for weekend looking good with a nice settled spell from Friday and good sunny spells.

"Not looking very warm but still nice and settled. How long will it last says the farmer thinking of hay? Possibly into middle of next week but uncertain and could turn cooler."

In a further update today, O'Reilly said: "That high [pressure] could be a little stubborn to move and badly needed after a very wet May for many."

Met Eireann's outlook for the bank holiday weekend is as follows:

Friday, May 31
Dry and sunny with light northerly winds. Highest temperatures of 14 to 19 degrees, coolest near north facing coasts.

Friday night: Dry with long clear spells and light northerly winds. A few pockets of mist and fog may form overnight. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees.

Saturday, June 1
Dry with sunny spells in most areas, although it will be cloudy at times near northern coasts. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees with light northerly winds.

Sunday, June 2
Sunday is looking cloudier but largely dry. Highest temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees generally but cooler towards northern coasts.
