Joe Biden has secured enough delegates to formally secure the Democratic presidential nomination.

Joe Biden has now formally won the Democratic Party nomination to take on Donald Trump in November’s US presidential election.

Friday night saw Biden secure the 1,991 delegates needed to be the official Democratic candidate, essentially locking in his place in the upcoming election.

Biden served as vice-president to Barack Obama, and saw out competition such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren to become the Democratic nominee.

Obama officially endorsed Biden in April, saying that he had “all the qualities we need in a president right now”.

Donald Trump is yet to comment on this news.

Speaking about this news, Biden said: “Folks, tonight we secured the 1,991 delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination. I’m going to spend every day fighting to earn your vote so that, together, we can win the battle for the soul of this nation.”

He continued: “I truly believe that when we stand together, finally, as One America, we will rise stronger than before. This is the United States of America. There is nothing we can’t do, if we do it together.”

Biden’s statement in full can be read here.

The US election is due to take place on Tuesday 3 November.
