Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has unveiled new details of the proposed Cork Luas route, which is due to run from Ballincollig to Mahon Point.
The project is estimated to take around 10 years to complete, and will cost somewhere in the region of €2bn to €3bn.
A public consultation on the process has now begun, and TII is holding a four open day sessions in May to share more information on the project.
The planned route, which was published today, will span over 18km, and feature 27 stops.
These stops will connect Munster Technological University, Cork University Hospital, University College Cork, Cork city centre, Kent Station, Cork Docklands, Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Blackrock and Mahon.
The new route is similar to one proposed last year, "but includes some improvements", TII says.
"The biggest change is at the northern end of Melbourn Road where the route will turn east and run uphill past Bishopstown Community School, Ballinaspig Lawn, Bishopstown GAA, Highfield Rugby Club, Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Saint Columba's Convent and then through Cork University Hospital (CUH) campus," TII says.
The changes are hoped to improve journey time and reduce traffic congestion.
Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien said the project will be “transformative for the people of Cork".
“I encourage public engagement in this new public consultation," he added.
Full details of the proposal are available to see at www.luascork.ie, where you can also take part in the public consultation.
