PIC: An extraordinary image of Air Force One landing in Cuba

History in a single image.

Barack Obama is in Cuba for the first official visit by a sitting U.S. President since the revolution in 1959, and is due to meet his counterpart Raul Castro later on Monday to talk about improved relations between the two countries.

This image, posted to Twitter by Chris Martinez, shows Air Force One just moments before it landed at Jose Marti Airport.

Plans for Obama to meet Cubans on the streets of the old town in Havana were interrupted by a tropical storm, although he did manage to visit the newly re-opened US embassy in Havana, where he told staff it was “wonderful to be here.”

Obama said he believed that “change is going to happen here and I think that Raul Castro understands that.”

A thaw in relations between Cuba and the United States was announced in December 2014.

However, the issue of trade reopening between the two countries remains a massive sticking point – the existing embargo can only be lifted by the U.S. Congress, which is led by Republicans who oppose sanctions being lifted.
