Cold snap: Snow and ice forecast as thundery showers turn wintry tonight

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

Met Eireann have issued a yellow weather warning as heavy showers turn wintry over parts of the country today.

“Today will be cold and very windy,” a Met Eireann spokesperson said.

“There will be good sunny spells with scattered showers, however in the north and northwest, the showers will be more frequent and heavy with the risk of thundery downpours, so we are urging all motorists to take care on the roads.”

“On higher ground the showers could turn wintry. There will be top temperatures of four to seven degrees and very strong and gusty westerly winds.”

Temperatures will plummet this evening, with motorists urged to be vigilant.

“Tonight the showers will continue with the ongoing risk of thunder in the west and north as well as the showers turning wintry on higher ground,” the forecaster continued.

“It will be a cold and windy night with lowest temperatures of -1 to +2 degrees. There will be some frost, but this will be confined to sheltered places.”

The cold weather will continue tomorrow. although sunny spells will develop.
