There might be a great white shark headed to Ireland

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…

For those of you on the west coast of Ireland who like to pop down to the beach of a morning for a quick dip in the water, you might want to take a second look through the waves to make sure that you can’t see a fin popping out in the distance, as there may well be a 2,000lb Great White headed our way.

The shark’s name is Lydia, and she was tagged with a tracker last year so that scientists could keep an eye on her movements. Her location was last tagged at around 1,000 miles away from the Irish coast in the process of crossing the Atlantic, and at her current speeds, she could be at the Irish coast in around three days’ time.

Dr Gregory Skomal, senior fisheries biologist with Massachusetts Marine Fisheries told The Irish Mirror that they believe she may be headed for either our coasts, Europe or North Africa, but also warned that with global warming and rising ocean temperatures, this may not be the last time Great Whites come to our waters.
