A 2-year-old girl was seriously injured after she entered the rhinoceros enclosure at Brevard Zoo, in Florida.

The child slipped between the bars separating spectators and the rhinos and received an abrasion on her face. It has also been reported that the child’s mother sustained an arm injury.

The zoo’s “Rhinoceros Encounter” is described as a “hands-on, educational experience with Brevard Zoo’s white rhinoceroses.”

According to local news source WFTV, the girl was taken to hospital under a trauma alert status.

However, a statement released by the Arnold Palmer Hospital on behalf of the girl’s father suggests that her condition is stable.

“Today has been a trying day for our family. We’re thankful to everyone who has reached out with their concerns. Our daughter is in good care at Arnold Palmer Hospital and is doing well. My wife was also treated for her injury and has been released from the hospital. At this time, we ask for privacy as we focus on our daughter’s recovery.”
