Theresa May Brexit deal

“This is a decision that will come under immense scrutiny…”

UK Prime Minister Theresa May hosted an emergency meeting of her Cabinet on Wednesday afternoon as she attempted to persuade senior ministers to back her Brexit plan amid a backlash from the DUP and opposition in her Conservative Party.

But speaking in front of 10 Downing Street on Wednesday evening, Theresa May said that the cabinet had had a “long, detailed and impassioned debate” and cabinet has agreed draft Brexit withdrawal agreement, but made it clear it was decision “not taken lightly”.

She also said the draft withdrawal agreement was “the best that could be negotiated” called the decision to accept it as a “decisive step forward”.

May is expected to speak to the rest of the MPs on Thursday morning.

Guy Verhofstadt, Brexit Coordinator for the European Parliament said following the news: “While I hope one day the UK will return, in the meantime this agreement will make a Brexit possible, while maintaining a close relationship between the EU and UK, a protection of citizens rights and the avoidance of a hard Irish border.”
