It’s your classic “not bad” situation on the weather front this week

Dave Hanratty

Weather forecast week 18 February

Mild enough but prepare for rain here and there.

February is really kicking into gear for the spring truthers out there with a fair bit of sunshine and conditions that could reasonably be described as “fierce mild” in recent days, with some parts of Ireland reaching 16.5 degrees.

But then there’s also been some bracing wind chills and the feeling that it could burst out lashing at any moment.

Throw in a report that anticipates the country’s highest February temperatures of all time to arrive soon and you’d be forgiven for not knowing what to plan for.

As of Monday morning (18 February), Met Éireann has given some insight on the coming days, and it’s… not terrible.

Monday shall be “rather blustery” with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers.

Some of those showers – mostly located in the western half of Ireland – will be on the heavy and prolonged side, bringing a slight risk of hail and thunder.

Highest temperatures will range from 8 to 11 degrees in fresh and gusty southwesterly winds.

In the evening, showers will become confined to northern counties, with good clear spells arriving in most areas.

There’s a slight risk of frost as temperatures drop between 1 and 4 degrees in moderate southwesterly breezes.

Tuesday 19 February will kick off in dry fashion before rain hits the west coast during the early morning and into midday.

Rain will turn heavy and persistent across the southwest and west as more breezy fare take hold.

There will be afternoon highs of 7 to 10 degrees, though it should get milder after dark. By nightfall, expect cloudy conditions with patches of rain and drizzle, especially along coasts and hills.

Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees in mostly fresh southerly winds, strong to gale force on Atlantic coasts.

Wednesday 20 February will see things pick up a bit, with “mild, humid and mostly cloudy” your key words to jot down here.

Scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle are also on the cards, mainly affecting Atlantic counties, with things being generally patchy further east.

It will get drier in the afternoon as brief sunny spells come into focus. Highs of 10 to 13 degrees.

Wednesday night will be very mild with patches of mist and drizzle, getting more persistent in the west and south towards the morning.

Lows of 8 to 10 degrees in southerly breezes.

Thursday 21 February brings scattered outbreaks of rain or drizzle that will ultimately lead to a largely dry afternoon and evening.

It will be cloudy enough, though, with highs of 11 to 15 degrees.

Friday 22 February also has highs of 11 to 15 degrees forecast, with the best values further north, as with the previous day.

Overall, the outlook is dry, though there will be plenty of cloud and some scattered falls of rain.

Beyond that, sunshine will break through as things get a bit calmer as part of a general mild situation.
