There could be spot flooding and lightning damage in the counties impacted.

Met Éireann has issued Status Yellow thunderstorm warnings for five counties, which have already taken effect.

The alerts apply to Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford and are scheduled to last until 6pm on Saturday (7 June).

The warnings read: "Scattered thunderstorms today with a chance of hail.

"Possible impacts: Spot flooding, lightning damage."

Saturday evening

"Dry at first tonight with clear spells. Later in the night, scattered showers will spread across the country from the northwest.

"Lowest temperatures of 4 to 9 degrees in a light westerly breeze."

Sunday

"Tomorrow will bring sunny spells and scattered showers. Once again, the showers will ease through the evening.

"Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees in light to moderate westerly winds.

"Sunday night will be mainly dry with clear spells and just well-scattered showers.

"Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees with light to moderate southwest breezes."
