Two men dead following helicopter crash in Westmeath

Gardaí confirmed the news on Tuesday evening.

The incident is understood to have occurred at approximately 3.30pm at a piggery in the Jorristown townland, between the villages of Raharney and Killucan.

One of the men was an Irish national, while another is understood to be from Eastern Europe. Both of the deceased were in their 40s.

Gardaí confirmed they are liaising with the family of the Irish man, while they continue to try and contact the other man's family.

Both bodies have been removed from the scene to Regional Hospital Mullingar where post mortems are due to take place.

Gardaí confirmed that the local Coroner has been notified.

The scene is set to remain persevered overnight to allow for this investigation to take place.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit of Ireland, part of the Department of Transport, also released a statement, posting on X: "The AAIU has been notified of an accident involving a single-engine helicopter near Killucan Co. Westmeath this afternoon.

"The AAIU is deploying a team of inspectors at this time.

"Further updates will be provided when available."
