What it looks like to have a giant whale under your boat and know absolutely nothing about it

Ignorance is bliss, especially so in this case.

Ignorance is bliss, especially so in this case.

The pursuit of whale watching is extremely popular and something we’d love to give a try ourselves someday but it’s one thing doing at a safe distance and a whole other thing having a giant one appear right under your nose when you least suspect it.

The occupants of this boat in the Valdes Peninsula in Argentina didn’t appear to have a breeze that there was a massive 50-foot whale beneath them in the picture below, however, and it’s probably a good thing because no doubt a few of them would have suddenly lost control of their bodily functions had they caught a glimpse.

The picture was taken by wildlife photographer Justin Hofman – yes, Justin, not Dustin – who, according to the Daily Mail, had the permission of Argentine authorities to dive with the whales in the protected lagoons near the Valdes Peninsula, where southern right whales go to raise their offspring in warm waters every year.

Hofman took some more incredible pictures of the whales up close and personal which you can see here, but the one above stands out the most for being fascinating and terrifying at the same time.

And you thought Jaws was scary. Sheesh.
